  • Overview

    The Medical Transcriptionist - OC provides transcription services of dictation dealing with inpatient, outpatient or ambulatory medical treatment.



    Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    Transcribes highly specialized medical dictation that covers a wide range of medical specialties, which meet established medical, legal, accreditation and organization requirements.


    Applies knowledge of an extensive body of highly specialized medical and scientific terminology of the unit such as anatomy, physiology, diseases, tests, pharmacology, surgical procedures, laboratory values, characteristic of a medical, surgical, psychiatric, neurological, cardiovascular, or another specialty unit of the medical facility.


    Familiar with format and requirements for narrative summaries, diagnoses and procedures, surgical reports, medical evaluation boards, consultations, tissue reports, radiology reports, autopsy reports, technical and administrative correspondence, and other reports necessary for the completion of patient records or relating to patient treatment.  Identifies and corrects inconsistencies in dictated materials applying knowledge of elementary practical anatomy, medical techniques, major disease processes, and medical procedures.


    Organizes patient records and the relationship of their parts in order to search records and extract medical information and data.


    Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.


    Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 


    Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.



    High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency and minimum of 12 months relevant experience.


    A fully qualified typist (computer keyboard) capable of 80 WPM is preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office software. Able to use various programs, such as Word, Excel, Access, and Project to generate tables of contents, import graphs or databases, create glossaries, align multiple columns, print document, identify files or make other notations at the top or bottom of each page, and create form letters and automatically merging these with mailing lists.



    Medical terminology and Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT), American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT), or Registered Medical Transcriptionist is highly recommended.


    Basic Life Support-Provider (BLS)


    This position requires having the following immunizations, with accompanying proof copies of such records, prior to an offer of employment.  The responsibility of purchasing these immunizations and/or gathering these records is the responsibility of each interested candidate.

    Hepatitis A / Hepatitis B (3-shot series for immunity)

    Measles / Mumps / Rubella (MMR)

    Varicella (Chicken Pox)


    TB Skin Test with negative results (if positive, proof of negative chest results within the past 12 months)





    Working knowledge of medical terminology, general medical ethics and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

    Operational knowledge and understanding of AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and compliance practices with ability to educate and train others

    Solid transcriptionist skills

    Excellent customer service skills

    Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)

    Skilled proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

    Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

    Solid organizational skills relevant to carrying out day-to-day responsibilities

    Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment


    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Must be skillful and tactful in communicating with people who may be physically or mentally ill, uncooperative, fearful, emotionally distraught, and occasionally dangerous.



    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers. Common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.



    Must demonstrate ability to apply critical thinking skills and expertise in resolving complicated healthcare, social, interpersonal and financial patient situations.  Must possess organization, problem-solving and communication skills to articulate medical requirements to patients, families/care givers, medical and non-medical staff in a professional and courteous way.        



    May have exposure to communicable illnesses.
